It's KidZart time!!!
It's that time of year again, our annual fund raiser for our art program here at LES. The order forms went home last Friday Nov. 13. I hope that you have had time to consider ordering something special to keep your child's art memories alive for years to come. The deadline to send in all order forms is this Thursday Nov. 19. Please make sure to double check your orders for the following things before sending them in: you have checked the items you want to order and put how many of each you want, check and re-check your addition so that your Rev Track or Check amounts match, and finally remember to attach your RevTrack receipt or check to your order form so we have proof of your payment. Thank you once again for participating in this wonderful win-win fundraiser for art!

Art Volunteers
I am getting the volunteer forms back from the teachers from Back To School Night, and will soon be putting together an art volunteer list. When that is accomplished I will let you know when I need your help. I will be contacting you and asking you for the best days/times for you to come help. Thanks ahead of time for being available to help our artists.

To begin our year as artists here at LES, we took a moment to reflect on what our Visual Art Standards are and how they will help us make art throughout this school year. Each young artist at LES was given the challenge to think about what inspires them as an artist. Is it art materials, personal experiences, practicing past information they have learned about in art, subject matter, etc. Then they created these quick works of art and the entire art hallway became a gallery for their work.
WELCOME BACK TO ART IN 2015-16 AT L.E.S.!
As always, there are a lot of exciting new things to learn about in art such as using new materials, learning about different artist and art styles, and exploring. I am enjoy working with all the children and look forward to a new year of learning about art with them.
Some of the things that are important that are coming up right away are:
Remember to send a spiral bound notebook (last year's or a new one is fine) to art with your child soon! We use them all year long.
Sign up for Snow Plow club deadline Friday Sept. 4
KidzArt will be turned in Oct. 12 to be made into product.

The Louisville Art Association, Louisville Cultural Council and the Louisville Public Library would like to invite students that have a strong interest in art to participate in the Youth Spring Art Show. All students will receive participation ribbons for their entries. The art show runs from March 5-30th at the Louisville Public Library. I hope you all had a wonderful Winter Break!
Now it's back to the business of making Art!
Winter Art Club will begin soon. It will be from Feb 2-Mar. 9 on Mondays in the
Art room 2:30-3:30. Applications for the drawing of those who will be chosen to participate will be available soon. This year we will be doing the
Federal Jr. Duck Stamp Contest Club once again. This will be an opportunity for any interested students 1-5th grade to come and draw, paint, color a picture of a duck in it's natural habitat. These will be entered into an annual Contest sponsored by the National Wildlife Association. It is to help young people understand the importance of taking care of our wildlife and their natural habitats. By creating these works of art to be judged in a national contest, kids will be not only supporting this program, but will be able to showcase their artistic talents as well.
KidzArt
This year's projects were:
Kindergarten: Primary Color Cats-kids learned how to create a cat through using line shape and color. They added a bit of whimsy by make them look "fancy" with lines and patterns.

First Grade Shapes, Lines, and Colors put together can make a Bird!!! Adding wild designs and patterns with lines and colors can make it really fun!
Second Grade The second graders used their observation skills in our Garden project for kids art this year, as well as working with mixed media of watercolor and oil pastels. Just for fun they added in garden gnomes. :D
Third Grade Third grade learned about artist Laurel Birch and her whimsical animals. So they each chose a favorite animal to draw and make "whimsical" looking with patterns, lines and colors. They used the special Prismacolor colored pencils that were purchased with past KidzArt $$ for this project.
Fourth Grade The 4th graders learned about Abstract art with this project. They learned that to "abstract" something in art is to change something that would normally be seen a certain way. See if you can tell what has been "abstracted" in this work.
Fifth Grade 5th graders created these bubble pictures by actually observing a blown bubble and the colors and transparency of them. Drawing these on black paper was especially effective. This was a good lead up to our Chihuly blown glass project as well. Be sure to check out the picture for their finished Chihuly Chandelier that now hangs from the ceiling outside the old Computer room.
Throughout the coming year there will be things that you may need to know that will help your students with their successes in art. I will be posting that information here for you to discover. So, please check this often so you can stay informed about the happenings in art, whether it is a supply that you need to send in with your child-like paper towel tubes, buttons, newspapers, or whatever. Or it may just be letting you know that we just watched a really cool video and I'll provide a link so it can be watched with you at home. I may also need volunteers for special projects, or a walking field trip sponsor. Like I said keep checking.
The first thing you will enjoy knowing (I hope) is that you DON'T need to worry about finding that pesky, elusive modeling clay this year. I have a different plan that doesn't involve you trying to find it-yay! :D
The second thing is that I sewed brand new art aprons for all to wear. So, students, if you didn't bring an art shirt, or can't remember to bring yours to art, NO WORRIES! I've "got you covered"! I hope that you like them, they're pretty stylish ;} I even got a rack for them to be neatly stored on after use-no more overflowing paint shirt basket to get in our way. They're going to be nice and clean each time you use them because you're going to do such a great job of cleaning them when you're done using them!
You will discover that I am going to update what each grade level is doing in art. All you will have to do is click on the grade level that you are interested in on the sidebar to our left here. I have included the art from the 2013-14 school year just to give you a preview of what you might see this year. This doesn't mean that we will be doing all the same things, because I like to change it up each year, but it gives you an idea of what will be available for you to see. Go ahead now and give it a try. I think you will find it's pretty easy.

Pretty classy don't you think?!
KidZArt Works
Due to the popularity and success that we have had with this art fundraiser, we will be doing it again this year. For those of you that aren't familiar with this annual program, we take student artwork and send it to a printer (KidzArt Works). The artwork is photographed and put onto whatever is ordered. There is a variety of products such as coffee mugs, notebooks, aprons, etc. that the art can be applied to. The proceeds come back to the LES art program to support your child's art education. We have purchased things that our normal art budget can't cover such as new sets of nice paint brushes and fun art supplies beyond paper, markers, and crayons. The price of art materials continues to rise and without this fundraiser, some of the more "adventuresome" projects can't be accomplished. For example, florist wire works wonderfully to make wire sculptures, but is way beyond the school budget(about $100 per year) to buy for the kids. KidzArt covers it! Simple as that. More information will be coming as the school year gets underway. So check Friday Folders as well as here for updates. In advance, thank you for your support for this wonderful opportunity!

Our 50th Anniversary Tile Wall Art has been installed and ready to welcome you and all our visitors to LES!!
Please come check it out and have fun finding your student's name. If they were here at the end of the 2013-14 school year and in art class they did a tile. The names are on all of them, so be a good detective and find it. There are pieces of tape with the name on them as well as written on the tile. After about a month the tapes will be removed for the final look. For now, enjoy the added convenience of finding your tile more easily.
Please check out the individual grade levels pages of this website when you get a chance. Up until now I have only had last school year's (2013-14) art work posted per grade level. I am beginning to post what we are doing currently now, so check it out!
