2nd Grade Art 2015-16
2nd graders began this year reviewing the Visual Art Standards and how they make our art happen. They were reminded that by "Looking"-noticing things around us, "Thinking"-coming up with ideas, planning, and analyzing our work, "Connecting"-making our work mean something to us, connecting with an experience and our world, and " Making"-actually exploring the art materials available and creating art, we can make art. Our first work together in art class this year was just that. These one time works of art are now hanging out in the art hallway. Make sure you come see our first art gallery of the year!

Texture
This art element has become a big part of our art lessons this year in second grade. After learning what texture is, seeing it in works of art, and exploring making texture by doing "rubbings", the students were ready to begin using it in their art work. They now had a better understanding of what goes into an artists work.

Bugs and Butterflies
Learning about symmetry in art can be so much fun! The second graders were also learning about butterflies and bugs in their classrooms at the time we did this lesson, so it had some good connections for them. They learned that symmetry means same on both sides. We looked at several examples where symmetry happens in nature, as well as man made things. We learned a technique in art called transfer, where they draw half of something on the fold of a paper and then rub what was drawn with a scissors handle and it "magically" moves from one side of the inside of the folded paper to the other. So they designed and drew only 1/2 of a bug or butterfly shape and transferred it. When done they colored both sides the same.

Chinese Clay Dragons with Texture
We took Texture to a 3D art form when the children learned about making dragons out of clay and etching texture with clay tools into the clay. They were learning about China in their classroom, so creating a connection in art proved valuable to continue their learning. These turned out great! They were glazed, put on display for a few weeks and then sent home. I hope that they all got home safely.

Castles and Architecture
What does a dragon need? A castle to fly over of course! Second graders learned about architecture in this unit of art. They learned how to first draw a castle with all it's architectural elements and then created a 3 D versiou by folding and gluing.

Jim Dine
Jim Dine is a contemporary American artist that uses unique techniques in his art. One of which is overlapping materials and either painting or coloring over these materials creating texture in his work. Since second graders are working with seeing, feeling, and using texture in their work this year, this seemed like a perfect fit. One of the series of paintings that Jim Dine did involved using a heart shape and warm and cool colors. A perfect February project! the students learned about the warm (yellows, oranges, pinks, reds ) and cool colors (blues, greens, purples) and created their own versions of this popular heart painting. They used the unusual technique of applying warm or cool colored tissue paper with watered down white glue painted over the entire surface of the tissue paper. This created a very textured looking and feeling work of art. It was also fun for them to use new materials and processes. (On a related note-Mr. Mike, our custodian/artist, has hung a sign by his textured paintings in the main hallway welcoming students to actually touch his paintings. We talked about how it is ok to do that if the artist-or art gallery-welcomes us to do so.)

Learning all about how artists like Georgia O'keeffe use value in their art, which can also show texture.
Second graders learned about symmetry while making these clay butterflies.
Continuing their fun discovering what they can do with texture in art, second graders created these Bas Reliefs using cardboard shapes, yarn, and glue. They covered them with aluminum foil and then burnished them with black acrylic paint to make them look old.
Now What's Happening in Art?!
Second Graders have been working with the Art Element Texture all year and have done some fun and interesting projects that include Texture. Check out the bowls that they have made.

2014-15 School Year Art
Please keep checking back to see what we are doing in art this year!
We have been learning many things in art so far these few times we have been together. We have learned how to be an artist through our observation, our envisioning, our connecting and transferring, and using our creativity. (These words may sound familiar if you read about the new Visual Art Standards that were posted at the Home page of this website) We have also been practicing some life skills like how to be good listeners so learning can take place in the art room.
Our first project was a mini "field trip" out to our LES community garden to sketch. The children were to choose their favorite spot in the garden to sketch, observe what to sketch, make artistic decisions about whether to make a drawing of a few vegetables, or the whole garden, and then transfer what they saw into a final work of art. They used the art technique of oil pastel/water color resist (have them tell you about that experience sometime) to create beautiful works of art. These will be our art for this year's KidzArt fundraiser. Check some of them out that have gotten off to a good start!

Starry Night 2nd Grade Style
Second graders have been learning about texture in art and how different artists have used it. Starry Night by Vincent vanGogh is one of those artists that clearly used a LOT of texture in his paintings. He also put a lot of himself into his work showing his emotions as well as the world around him. We studied this work of art and looked closely at what all went into Starry Night. Did you know that this is a painting of the morning star outside vanGogh's window with the village below. Second graders have been challenged to draw the top half of their pictures as vanGogh depicted the night sky, then below that what their "village" or community looks like. Below are a few of the stages they have gone through to get to their final work.

Second graders sketched their picture, then drew them on a very large piece of black paper, traced over them with glue. While they waited for them to dry, they practiced coloring in their sketch as they might do on their final. When the glue dries, they will do a "rubbing" over it on white paper, color both to have two works of art.
Young artists at work! We looked at some professional garden paintings to get some ideas and are going to include a garden gnome or two just for fun! See if you can find them in your child's painting when they bring it home.
