2015-16 LES 5th Grade Art
Wire sculptures are always a hit for 5th graders!
Radial Symmetry
The young artists of 5th grade revisited the purpose of art at the beginning of the year. A review of the Visual Art Standards: Observing, Invent and Discover to create, Envisioning, and Connecting to Transfer, was the way we got back into why we create art. A choice of materials, techniques, style, and exploration were our beginnings
2014-15 5th Grade Art
And here are some of the finished Pop Art Paintings done by 5th graders
ANDY WARHOL POP ART PAINTINGS
The fifth graders learned about famous American artist Andy Warhol and his style of art called Pop Art. They learned that Pop Art got it's name from painting things that are popular at the time. Taking that theme, we used the wrappers from our favorite candy that was received during Trick or Treating this year in Downtown Louisville on our Annual Halloween Parade. Below is the beginning process. Stay tuned to see how these turn out. I'll keep you updated!

Faux Chihuly
Fifth grade classes learned about the work of the amazing American glass artist, Dale Chihuly, AND that it is currently on display throughout the Denver Botanical Gardens. If you get a chance go check it out in the next month and a half, the curators have set the exhibit to lights at night and they are calling it Chihuly Nights. I know I will be going to see this amazing exhibit! Don't worry, I'll be taking lots of pictures to share with the kids. If your kids asked for cheap plastic water bottles, it was for this project. We are creating a "faux" glass chandelier from each 5th grade class to hang in the halls of LES as a parting gift to the school. It has been a lot of fun and we can't wait until they are all done and on display for all to see. Each child took their bottle and colored it with Sharpies and then cut it into spirals. They discovered that, just like glass, when heated (we used a hair dryer) the plastic will change from a solid property to a fluid property and then upon cooling back to a hard property. It was fun and fascinating!

The finished Chihuly Chandelier
Fifth graders began their year in art discovering color. Color in particular that is found in nature. We looked at several pictures of rainbows (inspired by our unusual amount of rainbows we've had in late summer), and bubbles. We even had some fun blowing bubbles and watching how the light makes "shineys" on them as well as glimmers of parts of rainbows. We shared what we know about how the colors of the rainbow happen as well as the order they come in. A print of Wassily Kandinsky's "Several Circles #323" which can be seen here, was used for inspiration to create the children's works of art below. These "Bubbles" will be used for KidzArt this year. Hope you like them! I think they turned out great and the kids had fun creating them.
